Outsourcing Malaysia Champions ‘Leapfrogging Competition: From Local to Global’

YB Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam, Human Resource Minister, launched the Smart Sourcing Summit 2012 at Royale Chulan, KL.

The 2-day summit will feature several renowned prominent speakers such as YB Senator Dato’ Idris Jala, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and CEO of PEMANDU, Mr. Michael Warren, Vice President of MDeC and Encik Zulfiqar Zainuddin, Senior Vice President, Investment, of Iskandar Investment Berhad. International speakers include S. Swaminathan, the Managing Director & CEO of Infosys BPO and Martin Conboy, the President of Australian BPO Association. The speakers will share insightful presentations on Malaysia’s responsiveness to market expectations, trends in global sourcing and strategic approaches to going global.

During his keynote address, the minister mentioned that his ministry has benefited in terms of achieving KPIs because the ICT sourcing industry has contributed to tremendous jobs growth and business activities.

“Malaysia ranks among the top 3 countries in the world in terms of global sourcing of services,” said YB Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam.

Outsourcing Malaysia (OM) is an initiative of the Malaysian outsourcing industry and is a chapter of PIKOM, the country’s National ICT Association. It is primarily focusing on helping to promote to the world, the country’s multiple outsourcing competencies and competitive edge.

The prime objective of Outsourcing Malaysia is to enhance global visibility of Malaysian service provider capabilities to buyers from all over the world. Outsourcing Malaysia or ‘OM’, will focus on enabling both buyers and providers of services to work together in addressing service needs within the aegis of global best-practices and competencies.

World-class Shared Services & Outsourcing (SSO)

Sourcing services is a big industry in which prominent business activities include IT services, shared services and business process outsorcing (BPO), regional headquarters, research and development (R&D), training and environmental management.

For the case of Malaysia, we are famous for the Shared Services & Outsourcing (SSO) location in which AT Kearney has classified Malaysia as being world-class.

The pulling factor has been contributed to the core competencies of Malaysia such as a well-educated and multi-lingual workforce, a world-class infrastructure at lower cost, as well as a conducive business environment.

Malaysia is an ideal location for most offshoring activities ranging from the back office operations to up stream activities such as research, design and development to down stream activities such as marketing.

To date, there are over 130 Shared Services & Outsourcing companies in MSC Malaysia ranging from major local players to multinationals which responsible for the setup of 250 call centres in the country.

The biggest players in this industry are multi-nationals like ACS, BMW, DHL, HSBC, IBM, Intel, Motorola, Nokia, Shell, Unisys and etc.

This outsourcing industry is estimated to worth US $ 1.6 billion in year 2012 and projected to be worth US $1.9 billion by 2013.

According to an IDC report, the key growth areas for Malaysian entities remain Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), Systems Integration (SI) and IT Consulting. The Government, Financial Service Industry (FSI) and Manufacturing verticals remain the largest services opportunity verticals for the country.

 

Experts Stretch Their Wings

 

During this two days conference, key players in the outsourcing industry will attempt to market their offerings by providing insights and visions for years to come, particularly 2013. 

For example, Iskandar Malaysia preached that an integrated work-play-live environment is important to spur innovation and value creation.

IIOM (International Institute for Outsource Management), Cuscapi and Daroy Consultants & Company Advisors Ltd opined that it is important to have proven capabilities in which the good track records will ensure success for marketing and business deals.

On the other hand, VADS BPO Berhad, Mesiniaga Alliances and The IA Group felt strongly about the need of vertical centricity in order to keep up with responsiveness to market expectations.

As for PwC Advisors who reminded the summit about the importance of socially responsible sourcing which is important to create socio-economic value, uplift poverty and empower smaller communities to make bigger contributions to economies.

PMC preached the concept of PUSH – Professional Underpinnings in Synchronized Harmony in which common sense is important to apply capabilities in an extremely connected world.

Daroy Consultants & Company Advisors Ltd, Australian BPO Association, IIOM and Matryzel Consulting will discuss about the need to move away from a traditional supply models towards co-adaption, domestic adoption model where corporate outcomes are being aggressively pursued in the form of entrenched partnerships between service providers.

Other highlights of the summit include :

  • PEMANDU’s presentation on the ETP journey about how Malaysia is taking responsibility for its own future and strategy to achieve vision 2020.
  • Australian BPO Association will explore the current and future trends for the Outsourcing industry particularly on outsourcing verticalisation portfolios.
  • Manpower, K-Workers MDeC, Sunway Group, Talent Search, Khazanah Nasional Berhad to discuss on key challenges for sourcing of human capital.
  • Daroy Consultants & Company Advisors will advise on leveraging on Merger & Acquisition as strategy to going global.
  • Penang Services Advisory (PSAP) will preach Penang as an ideal location of choice for SSO industry.
  • Basisbay, HDC, CSC, iProperty Group, IPServerOne will discuss on the benefits for organisations by leveraging on outsourced data centres for infrastructure and services from local providers who extend their services globally.

This is an event attended by consultants, strategic thinkers and BPO implementers.

Mr. Swaminatham, MD & CEO of Infosys BPO explained BPO, “Building smarter organisations by making clients more agile and efficient in their businesses,” he said.

He stressed a point that talent management is an integral part of BPO because ultimately some jobs will be laid off. By exercising smart sourcing, organisations will be able to balance out the negative outcomes of BPO to see through the intended objectives in order to achieve transformations.

It shouldn’t be as simple as cutting jobs, rehiring talents or talent retention. Smart sourcing must incorporate talent management as its deliverable.
