Biometrics and other tech converge into transformative use cases at NEC’s customer experience centre

Biometrics, AI, IoT, and big data converge into transformative use cases at NEC Malaysia's customer experience centre

NEC Malaysia hosted a tour of their Customer Experience Center (CEC) to showcase specific use cases that align with Malaysia’s digital economy blueprint and their clients’ transformation strategies.

GM and head of business units, Chan Chern Pong said, “It’s a combination of our over 30 years in the market; through the trust of our clients we understand what the market is looking at now and in the future.”

The tour had focused on solutions in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and also digital biometrics which NEC ranks first globally for by NIST, or the US’ National Institute of Standards and Technology.

A solution that combines real-time surveillance with face recognition and also a behaviour recognition system.

Chern Pong described, “We are the leading technology provider for digital biometric, continuously rated by NIST as the most reliable and number one in accuracy and performance. We can demonstrate this with all the different (solutions) we integrate with and our analytics software on top of it.”

An access control system suitable for immigration checkpoints, comes in a gateless version using facial recognition for use in crowded venues like theme parks. No gates means no queues.

This recognition makes it suitable for customer experience and security use cases in areas like access control, hospitality, in-store payments, and automated teller machines (ATM) procedures.

The CEC served to help clients visualise how the technology together with AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and big data can be practically applied in their own environments, going beyond static presentations to tangible and interactive demonstrations.

The secret sauce: Algorithms

Chern Pong shared that NEC works with many approved hardware players on components like cameras and image processing engines. Algorithms, however, are what drives NEC’s leadership in digital biometrics performance.

The smart retail corner complete with NEC’s 2-in-1 smart Point-of-Sale system. The POS system is wireless, lightweight, and supports retail solutions like agile pricing digital price labels that allow you to update prices remotely, anytime.

NEC has been working on biometrics since the 1970s, starting with research and development (R&D) in fingerprint recognition before expanding its biometric portfolio to include other modalities like palmprint, face, iris, as well as voice and ear acoustic authentication. In 1989, NEC began its work in advanced face recognition systems, and of course these days, its solutions have elements of artificial intelligence as well

Global expertise with local adaptation

NEC Malaysia’s managing director, Wataru Irie, said, “If the IT market in Malaysia requires global standard, global connectivity… that’s the point for us to penetrate because of our footprint all around the world. We can apply our experience here.”

In fact, it is able to leverage its resources within the region or globally, by tapping into the organisation’s expertise and experience of implementing similar projects. This allows the NEC Malaysia to provide a very strong proposition from a technical proposal perspective.

“And our mission in Malaysia is to adapt and localise the technology based on customer requirements. “

Wataru also added that NEC takes into consideration the other global and competitive players in the country, when deciding when and how they approach the market.

This approach allows NEC to offer cutting-edge global technologies while ensuring relevance to the local market context.
