Alcatel-Lucent wins 2012 ‘Broadband Innovation of the Year’ title in Telecom Asia Readers’ Choice Awards

Alcatel-Lucent has been publicly honoured for its role in extending access to fast broadband services in Asia by being awarded the title ’2012 Broadband Innovation of the Year‘ in the Fifth Telecom Asia Reader’s Choice Awards in Kuala Lumpur. This annual industry event recognizes innovations and contributions to the industry by the top telecom vendors operating in the Asia-Pacific region.

In presenting the award, Telecom Asia praised Alcatel-Lucent for the commercial introduction of its VDSL2 Vectoring technology. The official award citation read: “Alcatel-Lucent was the first to announce a commercially-available VDSL2 Vectoring solution in September 2011, and has a track record of six commercial VDSL2 Vectoring contracts to date (including Belgacom and Telekom Austria), and trials with more than 20 service providers around the world. Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 Vectoring technology builds on the company’s ISAM family of fixed access products, which has already been deployed by more than 250 service providers, and supports more than 90 VDSL2 projects.”

Governments and service providers in over 90 nations have set aggressive national broadband targets and firm timelines to make affordable high-speed broadband and wireless services universally available, and Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 Vectoring technology is playing an important role in extending that accessibility. At present, Asia is home to 12 such national projects and governments and operators are investing heavily in critical infrastructure to connect people to the digital economy and make services like banking, healthcare, commerce and mLearning available.

“Alcatel-Lucent is delighted to be recognized by Telecom Asia’s readers,” said Fazlin Mohd, President of Alcatel-Lucent for Malaysia, accepting the prestigious award on the company’s behalf. The dynamic intensity and diversity in the Asia Pacific region is driving innovation in telecommunications. The next five years will be even more exciting, and Alcatel-Lucent’s innovative technologies will be at the heart of this change.”

Alcatel-Lucent’s latest innovation in the VDSL2 Vectoring domain, called Zero-Touch Vectoring, automatically ensures that VDSL2 modems already installed in customers’ homes can continue to run at full speed without undermining the service quality for customers subscribing to higher-speed VDSL2 Vectoring. This eliminates the need to update the firmware on all modems on the network, as was previously necessary. As such, Zero-Touch Vectoring really clears the path for the quick, cost-effective rollout of superfast broadband over existing copper lines.
