– Malaysia Internet Exchange (“MyIX”) or also known as ‘Persatuan Pengendali Internet Malaysia’ – an initiative under the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (“MCMC”), has reduced current port fees for all Malaysian Internet Service Providers (“ISPs”) and other members effective 1st April 2016. This was announced during its 8th Annual General Meeting (“AGM”) held recently.
The reduction in fees is across the board for all port speeds ranging from 100Mbps to 10Gbps and is expected to save ISPs more than 10% of their existing monthly fees.
MyIX Chairman, Chiew Kok Hin, says that this decision was made in line with MyIX’s goal to encourage greater usage of its node and to promote greater peering between local ISPs.
“We also hope that savings by ISPs can be passed on to the end-consumer in efforts to reduce Internet charges in Malaysia. It has always been MyIX’s goal to progressively reduce costs for the benefit of members. We hope our ISP members will also upgrade their existing ports to a higher speed / bandwidth towards promoting better quality of Internet service in the country; more so as the demand grows exponentially in Malaysia,” Chiew said.
Central Node upgrade to 100G
During the AGM, MyIX also received approval to upgrade its central node’s capacity from the existing 40Gbps to 100Gbps.
“We are already utilising approximately 65% of the central node’s capacity and hence going forward, an upgrade is necessary. This upgrade is planned to meet the projected Internet connectivity needs of the country over the next 2-3 years,” added Chiew.
At the recently held MyIX AGM, the present Executive / Steering Committee was mostly retained with Chiew (AIMS Data Centre Berhad) re-elected as MyIX Chairman while Lim Chee Meng (Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd) was re-elected as Deputy Chairman.
The elected Committee will serve a two-year term for Year 2016 and 2017.
