Samsung’s Android-powered MFPs for an Internet of Things era

By Cat Yong

The Android operating system goes beyond tablets, smartphones and into multifunction printers (MFP), courtesy of Samsung. The Android-powered MX4 series of multifunction printers, the first of its kind in the world, is claimed to be more independent, intuitive and scalable as a result of Android.

Samsung also designed these printers with the Internet of Things (IoT) concept in mind.

During the Malaysia launch of these printers, Head of Channel Sales and Supplies, Samsung Asia Pte. Ltd., Gan Ta Loong said, “This series of MFPs use IoT technologies to be able to connect seamlessly to any device, any appliance. It also opens up endless opportunities for developers to develop applications (for the business printing environment).”

According to Samsung Malaysia Electronic’s president, Lee Sang Hoon, “Samsung is a user-centric innovator, and the MX4 series will introduce Malaysian enterprises to an Android platform which will allow business customers to experience greater multidimensional and advanced printing technologies.”

For example, the new MFPs feature 10.1-inch full touchscreen panels. Users can search and print from web browsers without needing a computer, as well as preview and edit documents from the panel. Users of Samsung’s Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets, would also find the customisable printing interface technology, Samsung’s Smart UX Center, as a familiar user experience on the new MX4 printer series.

These printers will support any Android-based mobile device, as long as it is enabled with near field communications (NFC) technology, according to Samsung.

Gan shared, “Eighty-five percent of the total global print revenue, comes from the business-to-business (B2B) market.”

He also shared how in 2010, Samsung had defined a new B2B vision for the organisation.

Recognising their printing solutions as one of the major enablers towards their B2B vision, the company had rolled out business-grade features for their printing line up, rolling out a WiFi printer in 2010, and even acquiring a cloud printing company in 2014, to better position themselves in the cloud printing ecosystem.

Besides a smarter operating system, the MX4 series is powered by a 1GHz dual-core CPU which is capable of even faster document processing speeds.
