U.S DoD Renewed Support for Blackberry

Blackberry maker RIM enjoyed uplifted business sentiment by having the U.S Department of Defense (DoD) to have its six models of company’s BlackBerry 7 approved for use.

According to Reuters, this move is premised on Blackberry’s foundation on tight security principal.

RIM who is currently undergoing transition period of its product to its much anticipated Blackberry 10 platform is currently firefighting a few challenges such as fluctuation of the stocks, head-hunting for key personnel and identifying strategies to compete with iOS, Android, Windows smartphones.

In Malaysia, Blackberry is still popular amongst business users and people reckons that it is a good phone for its signature full qwerty keyboard, encrypted data communication, black color design, having ample business apps function and simplicity for phone calls and messaging.

People usually do not buy Blackberry to play mobile games. Period.

According to Reuters, the U.S DoD has been supporter of Blackberry. Barack Obama, who as president serves as commander-in-chief of the U.S. armed forces, uses a modified version of the smartphone.

The U.S. Army last year introduced new applications and capabilities for its BlackBerry users, RIM said. Its personnel can now take advantage of recent advances such as n ear field communications, augmented reality and voice-activated universal search.

Blackberry is a cross-road now, a similar position which Nokia been through recently until its decision to leverage on Windows Phone platform and to scrap its own software platform.

Hence, this is a testing time for Blackberry and the world is waiting for moment of truth which will only come later this year when the Blackberry 10 platform is officially released. Currently, it had release the platform and SDKs for software developers as beta.

During Feb 2012, it had announced the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0.

While The BlackBerry Bold 9790 and Curve 9380 was launched in Malaysia by Dec 2011.

The most fundamental thing which Blackberry has to adopt is to discard its old business model which relies on longer and structured planning and decision making while capitalizing on complicated supplier-chain to reach consumers. Instead of that, it should adopt a more agile and faster approach from the factory to retail stores.

Another aspect is that while Blackberry is still regarded as the business device for many business executives, not many people actually remembers which products had been launched and which latest models to buy ?

Who actually pays attention to numerical model names such as 9790,9380 and etc ?
