Avnet reinvigorates local efforts with Red Hat

Avnet Technology Solutions, Malaysia, has signed a local agreement to distribute Red Hat solutions across enterprises from different verticals in Malaysia. This comes at a time when Avnet’s General Manager, Chiew Yue Lam sees that demand for open source solutions in Malaysia is growing.

Chiew further described that Avnet is not like any other typical distributor. Being part of a bigger company, Avnet, Inc. that is one of the world’s largest distributors of electronic components, enterprise computer and storage products and embedded subsystems, Avnet is focused on value-added solutions distribution.

Chiew said, “We ensure there is expertise for the products we sell,” while adding that ten years ago, Avnet only carried IBM servers, but have changed their approach and moved towards solving problems.  Avnet also offers other value-added and complementary services like financing and logistics to customers who may need them.

Avnet Technology Solutions, Malaysia has presence in Penang, East Malaysia as well as a virtual office in Johore, and it serves over 25,000 customers via over 600 partners.

In conjunction with the distribution agreement, Avnet also announced renewed efforts into their approximately RM5 million Avnet Solutions Centre (ASC), which currently houses training, development and testing environments for technology vendors like HP, IBM, NetApp and SAP.

Red Hat ASEAN’s General Manager, Damien Wong said that Red Hat would continue to make available at the ASC, technologies for proof-of-concepts and sandbox environments, for the enablement of business partners.

Chiew shared that currently there are over 100 partners who are actively involved in training to have hands-on expertise at the ASC. After joint announcement by Red Hat and Avnet to make the ASC ‘more visible’, Chiew foresees more partners would come onboard to use it.
