Allianz Technology Australia: Transforming insurance through AI-enabled  data platform strategy

At the heart of Allianz's Data Platform is a strategic approach to data that goes far beyond traditional analytics.

At the sidelines of Cloudera EVOLVE25 in Singapore, an Allianz Australia technology leader revealed how the insurance giant is revolutionising customer engagement through sophisticated data products and AI-powered insights.

At the heart of Allianz’s Data Platform is a strategic approach to data that goes far beyond traditional analytics. “We create data products by bringing all the data together through platforms,” explained Vinod Sukumaran, Head of Business Intelligence and Data Technology at Allianz Technology, Australia, highlighting the organisation’s innovative approach to support customer engagement.

The scalable Data Analytics Platform is crucial for an insurer to actively work with customers to manage risks and try to mitigate them. “Retaining customers is as important as bringing new customers.”

By implementing machine learning models, Allianz has achieved a remarkable improvement in responding to customer needs through proactive engagement.

Innovative use cases

Integrating the Data platform with customer engagement processes could provide faster reach to customers and support their decision making. “The data from various customer interactions could be analysed for process improvements, identifying reasons for dropouts or complaints,” he explained, demonstrating the rationale of Allianz’s data-driven approach.

The organisation’s data governance is equally sophisticated. With data structured in distinct business domains, Allianz has implemented rigorous data classification and protection mechanisms. “We categorise data based on its sensitivity,” Vinod emphasised, underlining the commitment to data governance and security.

Looking forward, the Data Platform Strategy is to enable scalable AI tools including leveraging the platform to enable real-time data integration and advanced analytics.

A cloud migration journey

Allianz Australia’s cloud migration, completed in just four months and notably with zero downtime, represents a pivotal moment in the organisation’s Data Platform Transformation journey. “We were able to design a scalable infrastructure that enables our AI initiatives,” Vinod explained.

During Cloudera’s flagship customer event in Singapore, Vinod presented what this journey entailed, drawing feedback that the migration’s success was due to a proactive approach to problem solving, as well as adherence to Allianz’s prerequisites and standards, code compatibility that ensured code function in the new environment, and efficient data migration and performance optimisation.

As the insurance industry continues to evolve, the company is evolving with it by re-architecting its data infrastructure so that it is ready for AI and transforming raw data into meaningful customer experiences through intelligent, strategic use of AI and analytics.
