The other day I came upon an article about cyber security in the news.
The headlines proudly screamed, ‘(Security vendor) develops technology to detect hidden malware’.
To be honest, this isn’t the first of its kind and many other security vendors, in recent months, have started to proclaim that they have some kind of new-fangled technology to detect really malicious software on their systems.
All that this recent trend served to do, was raise a big huge question mark for me: What in the world have security solutions been ‘detecting’ and protecting us from, in the past?
Being able to know what was happening in end user networks, applications and end point devices, is the basis for everything. We could roughly anticipate the threat landscape and build solutions to defend against it …could all that have been for naught?
As just an end consumer, with no ties to the cybersecurity community or any expertise in the security domain, it has always seemed that the bad guys score more points against the good guy, than vice versa. In my honest opinion.
In the media, where there is an endless deluge of ‘so-and-so virus’ being discovered or ‘so-and-so virus’ making off with uncountable millions, good news of wins against the bad guys, are so few and far in between.
What am I missing? Or is that something else that is being hidden from the general public as well?
