CA Technologies’ vice president of security in APJ, Vic Mankotia, opines that security has to be a business enabler. Rather than information being held up and caught in security’s tangled web, there has to be a way for IT departments to know who is sharing what information with whom, with what access and on what device, and enable information and business, to flow and happen seamlessly. This ties in with CA’s vision for content-aware identity and access management (IAM).

| Mankotia: The right content for the right people with the right access on the right device is the way to view security |
Mankotia shared four trends that are forcing chief security officers and their organisations to change the way they view security. First, is how everything is becoming very data-centric. Mankotia emphasised, “Regulations of managing data are getting very, very stringent.
“Second is the consumerisation of IT, whereby every 14 months, you see a device refresh itself. In other words, there is a very rapid rise in access points (with which users access data).”
Online interactions are also being optimised. “Online businesses are getting more and more investments. Every facet of commerce is getting an online presence,” he said. Last but not least, the security VP highlighted how the security perimeter is disappearing rapidly.
General manager for security at CA Technologies, Mike Denning had commented during the annual RSA Conference last February, “Balancing business productivity and enablement with security and data protection is one of the top priorities of the CSO. This is made more difficult by today’s collaborative environments that include extended teams within and outside an organisation.”
Since last February, CA has also adopted the “Minder” naming convention across their whole security portfolio, building the brand equity of their CA SiteMinder Web access management and federated identities family of solutions.
They also added capabilities to their CA SiteMinder and CA DataMinder (formerly CA DLP) offerings for Microsoft SharePoint which boasts over 65,000 customers as of February 2012.
Mankotia firmly believes that the right information for the right people with the right access on the right device, would be the security model to implement, going forward. This is the approach organisations must take if they wish to protect their critical information from unauthorised use or disclosure.
