The last IT BYTES BACK had pondered aloud that due to recent events in the world of cyber security and hackers, vendor announcements had seemed to point to the following:
“It’s like being told, right in the middle of a raging war, that we hadn’t any idea what the enemy actually looks like. And the enemy has already infiltrated into the far recesses of our territory.”
A friend of mine, a cybersecurity professional had also read that piece. His first response?
“Any security company worth its salt will need to claim some ability to detect hidden malware, so no surprise there-lah!”
I also have my 2 sen, about what I think should be the larger concern here.
First of all, I think the author isn’t out to ‘punish’ that the (solutions) announcements came out. Rather he or she is wondering aloud about what else is being hidden from the public.
I’m actually also interested to hear about collaborations between vendors, if there are any at all.
When you think about it, the security business needs the bad guys around to continue being in business. So, to what extent are end users’ best interests being protected?
I’m not expecting altruism, but I am a little jaded by all the spiel after a decade in the IT industry.
Are we getting complacent and accepting mediocrity?
Or are we simply overwhelmed by far more advanced hacker technologies which have the luxury of seemingly endless resources. Another horror story I recently heard is that all the advanced cyber attacks we are seeing these days could be ‘inspired’ and/or executed by nation state cyber red teams.
As if things weren’t complicated enough already, now we private citizens, could also be caught in the middle of cyber warfares caused by countries’ politickings!
IT BYTES BACK! say: Our cyberdefenses are divided and weakened underneath an endless assault by the bad guys and supposedly good guys. And there is still not enough cooperation in cybersecurity, when it would actually probably, be best served by it.
