HANA in hot soup

The punches keep on coming for SAP.

A recent survey by Americas SAP Users’ Group (ASUSG) has revealed that SAP’s in-memory database software HANA, is in hot soup.

Of 377 survey respondents, 55 percent have not bought HANA, with three quarters out of this segment, saying they have no business case that justifies the cost to do so.

Also worth pointing out that SAP’s Fiori mobile application strategy is not helped by HANA’s situation. SAP Fiori is a suite of newly-written apps for SAP’s most used functions, with simple, easy access that is seamless across desktops and mobile devices.

SAP Fiori can be described as a HTML5 user interface on the front end, that links to existing SAP apps at the backend,  and SAP made the smart move of making Fiori free. Within one year, its apps increased from 25 to over 300.

But Fiori is rendered near unusable without current releases of those SAP apps (an expensive endeavour) or HANA software to power them (another expensive endeavour). SAP Fiori apps that require HANA are about 72 percent.

Without HANA, performance becomes extremely slow on mobile, an experience that won’t be tolerated by execs on-the-go, like me.

IT BYTES BACK! Says: Just being able to do things faster with HANA is not enough of a business use case, especially at the pricing HANA commands. And tying up really useful solutions to HANA as a  prerequisite, does not necessarily help HANA’s case. It may actually doom SAP apps, instead.
