TM Partners Microsoft For Cloud Offerings

TM ventures into cloud computing via its subsidiary VADS Bhd which provides cloud computing offerings called the Vads Cloud.

It is now partnering with Microsoft to offer Office 365 targeting SMBs.

Office 365 is a cloud-based productivity and collaboration suite that brings together Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint Online, Microsoft Exchange Online and Microsoft Lync Online. The tools are accessed solely via the Internet by its users.

One of Microsoft’s Cloud Chief Kurt Delbener, had earlier described the fundamental benefits of adopting cloud computing are more opportunities, choices and cost-savings scenarios for businesses looking to improve their capabilities and productivity. And the obvious beneficiaries are SMBs.

Not just for applicable to Malaysia, almost everywhere in the world, SMBs have lower IT budgets while the requirements for IT are high.

VADS will be targeting Office 365 at the 450,000 SMEs that are already subscribers to parent company TM’s other cloud services.

In a survey commissioned by Microsoft in the United States, 50% of the SMEs polled reported cost savings after using Office 365. And 42% said that cloud computing has reduced their IT workload.

Microsoft had released Office 365 in the middle of 2011, after it declared full fledge war to conquer the cloud computing industry since beginning of 2011. It organized Microsoft Cloud Summit during January 2011, launching development tool Visual Studio 2011 and Cloud Computing PaaS Windows Azure at the same time.

Personally I reckon that Microsoft’s admission to the cloud computing arena even though much later than competitors like Google and Redhat, has helped to expedite the momentum of this trend.

Google also took defense by accusing Microsoft of being late into the game and compares Office 365 with Google Docs which are being offered as free usage. Google has long been a steward of cloud computing, and had hope to create a platform under its leadership and provides free cloud computing PaaS (Google App Engine) for open source developers.
